For 9 years, the Theatre Orchard has been scouting talent to bring exceptional theatre to the audiences of towns in North Somerset. In Weston-super-Mare we’ve watched their discoveries in disused quarries, at the food festival, in pubs, on the seafront and in community centres. And for the past year or so, working together with North Somerset Council, the Theatre Orchard has staged dozens of good quality, affordable performances at Tropicana Weston, using this huge and much-loved local space to great advantage for the community. It been brilliant to walk up the road to the Trop to see wacky and belly-aching comedy, family shows, music, spoken word and dance. No trekking to Bristol; especially welcome at night, when you can be home (or in the pub) by 9:30pm!
But the Theatre Orchard relies completely on funding and has a beyond skeletal staff. To help them keep theatre at the Trop, I’m putting together a cadre of volunteers to work alongside Fiona M and Fiona T, supporting them at front of house, liaising between the performers and the tiny TO team and creating our own Weston specific theatre experience. Whatever that might be – we can all be the creators. And the beneficiaries.
So, we need all you talkers, idea spinners, artists, organisers, jolly people, community engagers to give a couple of hours now and then to help keep this thing afloat and get to see some excellent theatre to boot. The next volunteers meeting is at the Tropicana Weston on February 6th, 20:00-21:00. Who’s in?
